Nissan is geting sporty in Shanghai! The Japanese firm has already revealed a wild Leaf-based racecar set to debut in New York tomorrow, but now a Micra-based hot-hatch has surfaced at the Chinese expo.

Called the Compact Sport Concept, the GTI-style hatch features pumped up bodywork and has been jointly designed by Nissan's Japanese design HQ and Nissan's design studio in Beijing.

It's got some power to match its agressive styling, too. Under the hood is a direct-injection turbocharged 1.6-litre engine producing 188bhp. Strangely though it still uses the Micra's far-from-sporty CVT gearbox.

Don't go running to your local Nissan dealer to place a deposit yet though. According to the firm, this car is aimed squarely at young customers in emerging markets - suggesting it's unlikely to make it to the UK.

Good if not brilliant - Nissan back to form?

At last a really beautiful machine with sensible design , class-leading performance potential, generally none of the quirky mess of recent (Juke,Leaf). Just hope UK Nissan sees better sense and actively agitates to have it sold here, just for the vast millions of nissan fans who can't stomach the current OTT SUV cum 'cross-over' designs. Mmuch more than a passing resemblance to a Renault Clio though , from some angles.
