The big secret’s out! Auto Express’s top spy photographers have caught Peugeot’s new people carrier on the prowl – and the lion-badged model is preparing to claw its way to the top of the compact-MPV market.

It’s expected to be based on the same platform as Citroen’s new C4 Picasso, and our snappers say that, despite the Citroen wheels fitted to the black prototype, it is actually Peugeot’s new Renault Scenic-rivalling machine.

When it arrives in showrooms, the newcomer is to be badged the 3008. However, it’s not yet known whether the model will go on sale ahead of its 308 hatchback sibling or after the conventional model arrives in showrooms in 2008.

The people carrier is favourite to make it to the dealerships first, following the pattern which was set by the 1007. The mini-MPV arrived before its 107 hatchback stablemate.

Whenever it appears, the 3008 will aim to trump the competition with its excellent interior comfort and a stylish design. But whether the model will carry five or seven people has yet to be established. However, it’s thought that the engine line-up is going to be shared with the 308 hatchback, with the addition of the latest powerplants developed in collaboration with BMW. Naturally aspirated and turbocharged 1.6-litre units have been produced on the joint project, offering a range of outputs.

Fold-flat seats will definitely be standard, creating a large, practical loadspace. Expect to see Peugeot’s new people carrier at one of next year’s premier motor shows.
