The Volkswagen Passat grabs the Best Family Car award for the second year on the trot

Refinement is second to none, and superb ride comfort proves that VW knows a thing or two about suspension set-up.
Having won this award last year, the Passat shows no sign of relinquishing its grip on the Best Family Car title. So what is it that sets this model apart? Well, for starters the VW badge carries a great deal of weight. Not only is the firm's reputation for quality well founded, but it ensures the German four-door has strong residuals, which help to keep down running costs - essential when so many of these cars are used for business.

But that's not all that sets the Passat apart. In fact, it excels in a variety of crucial areas. Family cars cover notoriously high mileages, so good motorway manners are vital, and the Passat's are unmatched in this sector.

Refinement is second to none, and superb ride comfort proves that VW knows a thing or two about suspension set-up. The chassis is also pleasingly poised, with light, fluid steering that helps to take the sting out of long hours behind the wheel.

Not that drivers will be in any rush to get out of the cockpit - the classy ambience is backed up by top-notch material quality, generous cabin space and comfort levels which match those of many luxury saloons. All told, this is a highly convincing and downright desirable family car. We love it.

Commended

Skoda Octavia

The Octavia may be based on a VW Golf platform, but with a massive boot and plentiful passenger space, this car competes head on with key class rivals. Yet it costs thousands less and is very cheap to run. Mature road manners and efficient diesel engines enhance long-range comfort, while the robust interior and mechanicals are tough enough to cope with hard use.

Honda Accord

There are no new faces in this year's family car line-up, but that's not to say everything has remained static. The facelifted Honda now has a sharper nose and extra features, including a six-speed box for the 2.2-litre i-CTDi engine. Minor stuff, but enough to give the Accord a welcome mid-life boost. Not that its talents in other areas are wearing thin - it still runs the winning VW close.
