Best Convertible: Vauxhall Astra Twin Top

The Vauxhall Astra Twintop's stunning looks and impressive specifications earn it the nod as Best Convertible

Vauxhall Astra TwinTop

30th June 2006

Handsome as a hatchback, the model looks even more striking in convertible guise - and that's a key consideration here.
Let's raise the roof for Vauxhall and its truly desirable drop-top version of the Astra. The TwinTop joins the Volvo C70 in offering a three-element roof which is designed to fold into a smaller space than on rival cars. This ensures that the rear styling is less compromised - not that the Astra lacks visual appeal in the first place.

Handsome as a hatchback, the model looks even more striking in convertible guise - and that's a key consideration here. True, the interior is less adventurous, but it is very well packaged and offers more rear legroom than bigger and more expensive cabriolets. In fact, this is altogether a sensible machine. It is relatively affordable to both buy and run, plus it has a strong range of engines, including a 150bhp diesel powerplant and a punchy 200bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit, and impressive specification, too.

The only slight cloud on the TwinTop's horizon is the arrival in a few weeks of the excellent Volkswagen Eos. And Ford's Focus drop-top isn't too far off, either. All great news for convertible buyers looking for the greatest possible choice!

Commended

Jaguar XK Cabriolet

While not repeating the success of its hard-top counterpart, the XK drop-top has enough punch to see off every other car in its price bracket. True, the rear seats are pointless, but a stiff bodyshell and gentle ride quality mean that the XK soft-top has plenty of appeal.

Audi A4 Cabriolet

A facelift earlier this year enabled the A4 to retain its place on the shortlist. By far the most desirable and upmarket of the premium brand four-seater drop-tops, it enjoys brilliant residuals and build quality. Best of all is the updated engine range, which includes a mighty 414bhp RS4 unit.

Volvo C70

The first car in the class with a three-part folding metal roof, for a while it looked as if the second-generation C70 would take our top honour. Neatly packaged, it has an attractive cabin and a quick, quiet roof mechanism. Whisper it, but this desirable car gives safety-orientated Volvo added kudos.
