The Land Rover Discovery wins the best 4x4 Off-Roader award for the second year on the trot

Legendary off-road ability, a commanding driving position and a vast, robust cabin give the sense that the Disco can handle anything.
Whether towing, mountain climbing, family carrying or simply taking the sting out of the daily commute, the Discovery never fails to impress. Champion for the second year, the big Brit has an unmatched range of abilities which sets it apart from class rivals.

With a spacious seven-seat layout and well planned storage areas, it's highly practical, while the intuitive Terrain Response control knob, cabin ambience and excellent refinement mean the Land Rover is also user-friendly, adaptable and great to live with. That's not to say it's faultless, though: even if you take the more eco-friendly route and select the TDV6 diesel, as do the vast majority of buyers, you'll be lucky to top 25mpg, and acceleration is sluggish due to the heavy kerbweight.

However, legendary off-road ability, a commanding driving position and a vast, robust cabin give the sense that the Disco can handle anything. And the good news doesn't end there; the Land Rover has a class-leading image, and solid residuals mean it's a safe place for your money. Forget MPVs - this is the ultimate multi-purpose vehicle.

    Extra Info

    Mercedes ML

The second-generation Mercedes ML may have stuck with five chairs when everything else in this market sector is offering accommodation for seven, but that doesn't stop it showing most of the opposition a clean pair of heels. Well designed inside, it's equipped with a superb range of engines (particularly the 3.0-litre V6 diesel), and boasts excellent road manners.

    Audi Q7

No Volvo XC90 here - our 2003 Car of the Year lost out to the Q7 in a recent head-to-head. It may cost more, but the slick seven-seat Audi makes the Swede feel slightly dated. One of the largest cars in the class, the Q7 has the family flexibility of the Disco and the sporting dynamics of the ML, plus quattro four-wheel drive. Set to be much in demand - and with good reason.
