It's time to say "welcome back" to TATA! The Indian manufacturer is set to return to the UK early next year with an expanded line-up, including the Safari 4x4 and practical Indigo SW.

Due to go on sale next spring, the new range marks a change in direction for the firm, which has sold the TL pick-up and robust 4x4s, such as the Safari, in small numbers here before.

Until March 2005, TATA cars were imported by Phoenix distribution, a company set up by the people who ran MG Rover and the Phoenix dealer network.

Led by John Towers, Peter Beale, John Edwards and Nick Stephenson, Phoenix had been tipped to rekindle its relationship with TATA, following moves to restart the distribution business. However, while details of the new deal are still scarce, Auto Express has learned that the latest arrangements to bring the Indian-built cars here are unlikely to involve Phoenix.

MG Rover CityRover fans will also be disappointed to learn there will be no imminent return for the Indica, which provided the underpinnings for the Longbridge firm's small car.

Although a fresh city model is planned, based on an all-new platform, it's likely to be more than 18 months before customers see any sign of this addition to the line-up. But with 218,000 employees in 100 countries, bosses have a huge manufacturing capability to draw on.

As well as building cars, TATA makes a wide range of other products, including mobile phones and components for computers. The company is even involved in generating electricity.
