Set to compete in the same market as the Z2, the machine will go on sale in 2008.
With a length of 4.2 metres, the three-door model will sit above the Golf in the VW range. While it shares much of its running gear with the hatchback, the Scirocco also has many unique mechanical parts to give a more focused driving experience.
The styling will be dominated by the gaping grille which was first seen on the EcoRacer concept revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show last year, while the show car's low roof and thick C-pillars will also be carried over.
Entry-level variants will be powered by a 1.6-litre engine, but the most popular unit is likely to be the new 1.4-litre TSI. Combining a supercharger and a turbo, the hi-tech powerplant delivers great performance and low emissions.
