Spotchecks won’t be needed, as sensors weigh moving trucks

The detection equipment is to be installed at 24 sites on motorways and trunk roads across the UK to catch lorries exceeding their permitted weight.
Special sensors were buried under the M6 in the West Midlands in a pilot scheme to weigh vehicles as they drove by. Cameras captured registrations as a central computer checked to ensure lorries were no heavier than allowed.
If any were overloaded, VOSA inspectors seven miles down the road were alerted and the vehicle stopped. The trial was very successful - three-quarters of the lorries checked were so heavy they were prohibited from continuing.
"The results prove this system is hugely effective," said project leader Gordon MacDonald.
