Critics have slammed an oil giant's plans to cut carbon dioxide. BP is asking drivers to donate £20 a year to cover their vehicle's environmental costs.
It says 10,000-mile-a-year motorists generate four tonnes of CO2. The money - paid online through the firm's www.targetneutral.com website - would fund eco-friendly projects.
However, a spokeswoman for the AA Motoring Trust asked: "Why is BP just targeting motorists? Cars account for only 13 per cent of CO2 emissions. "
Meanwhile, BP has expanded the availability of its 102-octane high-performance fuel following trials at six UK sites. Thirty more stations will sell the petrol, which is designed for tuned supercars.
