A new, small two-seater has come on stream. Styled, engineered and built in Australia, it's called the Elfin MS8 Streamliner.

Originally the work of the Holden design team - which displayed the model at the 2004 Melbourne Motor Show - the Elfin has now been given the green light for production, with the support of Walkinshaw Performance, which is owned by British racing legend Tom Walkinshaw.

A 5.7-litre V8 feeds 329bhp to the rear wheels, while a tubular spaceframe chassis ensures stiffness and should make the Streamliner one of the world's most exhilarating road cars.

The roadster has met Australian production safety regulations, and initially only 100 will be made. A second Caterham-style model called the Clubman is expected to join the firm's line-up.

Prices for the two cars in the Australian market have already been announced; the MS8 Streamliner costs the equivalent of £48,229, while the Clubman weighs in at £39,881. Elfin has been producing race cars for more than 40 years, with no less than 29 world titles and championships to its name.
