More than six million penalty charge notices (PCNs) were issued to drivers in London in 2005 - a rise of nearly 300 per cent over the previous year.
Motorists in the capital received five million parking tickets, 700,000 bus lane charges and 390,000 other penalties, such as for stopping in box junctions. Barrie Segal of Appeal Now, a company that helps drivers challenge PCNs, said: "It's another way in which the British motorist is being hit."
