14th September 2006

At last year’s Greatest Drives, we said farewell to the first Audi TT. Only 12 months later, a new model is here – and expectations are high. But as you can tell from its positioning, we’re not entirely convinced about the Audi’s potential as a rewarding driver’s car.

What’s beyond doubt is that it’s a far more capable machine than its predecessor. We’re not sure that extends to the looks, however. Audi has obviously chosen not to tinker with a winning shape, and it comes across as a gentle evolution, rather than a ground-breaking step forward – although it’s more athletic in the flesh.

The 3.2-litre V6 is carried over, but has been remapped to improve throttle response. It retains a characterful exhaust note, but it provides a steady wave of power, rather than a significant shove in the back. It’s better at the top end, never feels strained, and the short-shifting six-speed gearbox is excellent.

With lessons learned from the RS4, Audi’s engineers have pulled their socks up in the handling department. The new TT tackles corners sharply and neatly, while traction and grip are never an issue. Yet the chassis doesn’t really come alive. It’s capable, but arguably less engaging than the Golf GTI, which has similar underpinnings.

On top of that, the firm suspension doesn’t help ride comfort. Highly desirable and much improved, the TT is a great coupé – although it isn’t quite as gifted as our top performers.
