Don't think for a moment that the Clio finishes up in second simply because it’s cheap. While we were at Croft, a good measure of how highly each car was rated was the number of times it could be seen pounding round the track. Regular appearances by the Porsche Cayman and Lamborghini Gallardo were hardly surprising – but the Renaultsport didn’t get much rest between stints, either.

Not only does it look the business with its rear diffuser and pumped-up bodywork, but inside was arguably the best set of seats found in any car here, too.
Not only does it look the business with its rear diffuser and pumped-up bodywork, but inside was arguably the best set of seats found in any car here, too. Granted, the Recaros are a £850 option, but the way in which they cosset and support every inch of your body from thighs to shoulders has to be experienced to be believed.

They help deliver a near-flawless driving position and enhance the Clio’s feelgood factor no end. That’s just as well, given that the rest of the cabin is a touch unassuming.

Initially, the 197’s performance is nothing to get excited about, due to its lacklustre low-rev pick-up. However, from 5,000rpm to the 7,500-rev limiter, the highly strung engine comes into its own with instant throttle response, a throaty exhaust note and slick gearshift.

While it isn’t as flexible or well mannered as the turbo hot hatches, neither the Focus ST nor Golf GTI could match the 197’s addictive attitude. As a driver’s machine, its only weakness is the slightly artificial and hesitant steering feedback, but its incredible agility and stability more than compensate. Very few cars travelled faster through Croft’s high-speed corners, and the Clio remained composed, sure-footed, informative and adjustable. Oh, and huge fun to drive.
