The Lamborghini Gallardo amazed us. You might think that’s hardly surprising, given the Italian firm’s reputation, but what impressed us most was the way this machine drove.

Onlookers may beg to differ once they have soaked in the angular lines, edgy flanks and the glass cover over the mid-engined 5.0-litre V10. And they would be even more astonished if they caught a glimpse of the cockpit.

That is where the Gallardo really scores over rivals – it has a sense of occasion nothing else here can match. From the steeply raked windscreen, low-slung bucket seats, exotic layout and Alcantara-clad steering wheel to the robust construction and decent visibility, the cockpit makes you feel very special indeed.

It drives in the same way. You expect an Italian supercar to be temperamental, but not the Gallardo. The recently uprated engine is docile at low revs, the sequential gearbox is a joy and you can raise the front suspension to help clear speed bumps. Clever stuff.

And the magic continues when you up the pace. The outstanding V10 delivers astonishing thrust accompanied by the best engine note of all our cars – and there’s even the occasional blue flame bursting out of the twin tailpipes.

This hints at an inner rebel trying to get out, but the four-wheel-drive Lambo’s road manners are peerless. Steering, high-speed stability, traction and chassis balance are all superior to that of Porsche’s 911 Turbo. Even on the wet, treacherous roads of the North York Moors it re-mained composed and utterly thrilling. In short, the Gallardo is tremendous – a car that gives you the drama without the drawbacks.
