The new machine, due to be unveiled at Paris, will be badged Pajero in some markets and is based on the same platform as its predecessor. But with a fresh face and refreshed interior, it hopes to scale new heights in the off-roader sales charts.
The biggest change comes at the front, where the current model's sharp lines have been replaced by a smoother look. Bold new headlights are complemented by a smart chrome grille, while the Mitsubishi's rear end has also been redesigned.
Inside, the dashboard has been revised to provide the Shogun with a far more modern feel. Aiming to tempt buyers away from Land Rover's Discovery, the latest model also comes with plenty of luxurious equipment, including a new 12-speaker sound system.
Engineered specifically to tackle tricky off-road terrain, the new Shogun's rugged mechanicals have been upgraded as well. A revised four-wheel-drive sysÂtem, complete with a rear differential lock, is intended to improve the SUV's mud-plugging ability without detracting from on-road handling. Two engines will be offered - a 3.2-litre four-cylinder diesel or a 3.8-litre V6 petrol powerÂplant. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but the new Shogun will go on sale in the UK in March next year.
Visitors to the Paris exhibition will also be able to see the next-generation Pajero Evolution displayed alongside the production model. This motorsport version of the 4x4 will take part in next year's Dakar endurance rally.
