Used choice: Range Rover

It’s all change for the Range Rover, as Land Rover’s most luxurious off-roader gets a mild makeover this month. The newcomer, which boasts an even plusher cabin, more kit and a new V8 turbodiesel option, is set to be a hit.

But if you can’t quite afford a TDV8 – prices start at £53,995 – how about the model it replaces: the 3.0-litre Td6? Some of the first 2002 top-spec Vogue cars can now be had for around £22,000. That’s not bad when you consider they cost nearly £60,000 new, and have sat-nav, climate control and leather, plus Land Rover’s brilliant air-suspension system. Sourced from BMW, the six-cylinder direct-injection engine may not have the punch of the new V8, but it still pumps out 174bhp and 390Nm of torque. This allows the two-and-half-tonne SUV to do 0-60mph in 12.7 seconds and hit 111mph.

While those figures won’t worry your average hot hatch, once on the move the Td6 is pretty impressive. What’s more, with plenty of soundproofing, refinement is excellent, and it should return around 25mpg. If you’re not worried about running costs, you could always plump for one of the two petrol models – but don’t expect to see much more than 15mpg.
