Nose shows what to expect from hot hatch
06th October 2006
Revealed in Paris, the Spider is effectively a four-wheeled version of the 20Cup three-wheeler, which Auto Express drove in Issue 891.
A grid of Spiders will form a supporting class for the 2007 Le Mans Series, in which Peugeot's new 908 diesel racing car, also revealed at Paris, will compete. But the Spider is much more than a track star. As with the 20Cup, its nose previews the forthcoming 207 GTi, which will be unveiled at Geneva in March and is set to feature a road-hugging splitter, sporty foglights and deep air intake.
The Spider also showcases the GTi's engine, a 175bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged unit jointly developed by PSA Peugeot Citroen and BMW. However, rather than being front-wheel drive, the Spider gets a racer-like rear-engined, rear-drive layout.
