Nissan has already replaced its Ford Focus-rivalling Almera hatch with three functional new models, including the chunky Qashqai off-roader, and it's now looking to the future of the supermini. Product planning boss Carlos Tavares told Auto Express: "SUV tastes will be catered for in a B-segment car."
This gives a strong hint that the next Micra will offer the rugged looks and practicality showcased on the Yanya concept car, which was first revealed at the Geneva Motor Show back in 2002

The show star pioneered the idea of a shrunken off-roader - a theory that was applied to the Qashqai. Nissan is keen to stress that this model isn't intended to be regarded as an off-roader, but instead to offer some 4x4 versatility and style in a compact family hatch package.
The current-generation Micra was launched in 2002, and isn't due to be replaced until 2009. However, the car is already beginning to be left behind by more recent class competitors, in the shape of the larger Renault Clio and the Vauxhall Corsa. Meanwhile, a Nissan-badged version of the all-new Suzuki Alto will join the UK model range in 2008.
