Anti-snooze kit gets a head start

A potentially life-saving device has been given the nod for production

24th October 2006

Driver Alert Master fits over the ear, and contains a tilt sensor which detects the angle of the head, letting off a beep if the wearer starts to doze off while at the wheel. Priced £4.99, it's ideal for late-night or long distance journeys, claims supplier Maplin Electronics.

Meanwhile, new technology is giving the RAC an instant breakdown on the quality of its recovery service. All patrols have been issued with PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) loaded with customer service questionnaires, which can be beamed straight back to headquarters from the roadside.

And there's something new to watch out for at Mercedes, which has announced a limited-edition timepiece. Made by Muhle-Glashutte, the CL Time features a clear sapphire crystal back to view its Swiss-made mechanism. Only 216 are to be made at a cost of around £2,500 each.
