An all-new Type R goes on sale next year, and the used car experts at VIP Trader Guide say there are now loads of the original available, which is depressing used values. We’ve seen early high-mileage examples dip beneath £6,000 in the classifieds, but spend another £1,000 and you should get a decent 2001/02 example. So what does your money buy? Well, a great engine for starters. Kicking out 197bhp and revving up to 8,000rpm, the 2.0-litre four-cylinder VTEC unit is an incre-dible piece of engineering. Backing this up are strong brakes and a responsive chassis.
In terms of looks, the Type R is a winner. Neat 17-inch alloys, a subtle bodykit and angular profile make for a fine combination. Inside, bucket seats lift the cabin – although air-con was an option, so always choose a car with this fitted.
An Anniversary edition arrived in 2002, featuring red Recaro seats and tinted windows, while a facelifted model arrived in 2003.
