Buyers can choose between a duo of proven petrol engines or a single 2.0-litre D-4D diesel, which is the pick of the line-up. So, ignore the plain-Jane looks of the original car, and marvel at the value for money on offer. Go for a 2001 Y-reg version of the entry-level T2 and the oil-burner could be yours for as little as £5,000. That will get you a family ferrier with around 60,000 miles on the clock. When you take into account Toyota’s superb reputation for build quality and reliability, it’s sure to have plenty of life left in it.
An even better bet is the latest model, introduced in 2004. It’s sharper looking and features a more powerful version of that diesel unit. Its boxy shape and strong engines make this the Verso of choice, but prices start at around £10,000 for entry-level examples. The third row of seats isn’t exactly spacious – but they’re fine for occasional use or for the kids.
