'Green' black cab joins the ranks

All hail the new Hackney Carriage; at least that's what company bosses hope we'll be doing

30th October 2006

This is the next generation of the famous London cab, the TX4, which manufacturer LTI claims is "the most advanced purpose-built taxi in the world". Featuring a new 2.5-litre engine, which is compliant with Euro IV emissions regulations and can run partly on biodiesel, it's certainly one of the cleanest.

The chunkier front-end styling features a distinctive grille. Equipment has been improved over the outgoing model, with ABS, coil spring suspension and an upgraded interior all fitted as standard. Prices have increased slightly, and now range between £26,995 and £35,495.

Peter Shillcock, managing director of LTI, said: "Our new taxi has enhanced passenger and driver safety, easy- to-use facilities for able and disabled passengers, and it retains the unique 25-feet turning circle required by the Public Carriage Office."

Earlier this month, LTI parent firm Manganese Bronze said it had signed a deal with a Chinese maker to build the cab in Shanghai for sale there.
