Students' smash screen test

Road accidents caused by 'rubber-necking' could be a thing of the past

Rubber-necking by drivers passing accident scenes costs the UK £27million a year in delays and additional collisions. That's the claim of budding engineers at Cambridge University, who have invented a portable screen that can be set up to hide an incident in minutes.

"It's the world's most advanced mobile anti-traffic screen," said lead designer Simon Middleton. The Highways Agency has been in touch with the group to compare the Axi-Shield screen with a Dutch design currently on test. The students claim theirs is better as it can be delivered in a van and set up by one person. A dedicated truck and trailer and up to six people are needed for the Dutch system.
