In the Frenchman’s enforced absence, Marcus Gronholm needed a top three podium finish to keep the two-way title fight alive until New Zealand, and possibly the final round here in the UK.
However, the Finn lost 11 minutes after rolling his Ford Focus on the third of 26 timed special stages – a mistake that handed the crown to Loeb, who had amassed eight wins from the first dozen events before injuring himself falling off a mountain bike in training.
“I was very angry with myself after my accident and the fact that it stopped me competing but, luckily, we had built up a valuable advantage. It has been extremely frustrating sitting at home watching the rally on the Internet, but now it’s a great feeling,” admitted a relieved Loeb.
Despite missing out on the drivers’ title, it wasn’t all bad news for Ford. Focus ace Mikko Hirvonen captured his first WRC win in the Perth-based event, while Gronholm recovered from 56th and last position to claim fifth place at the finish. His fightback and his fellow countryman’s maiden victory means
Ford now enjoys a healthy lead over Citroen in the makers’ championship, with two rounds remaining.
“I’m pleased that after losing so much time on Friday, I was able to score points and help the team move further ahead in the manufacturers’ championship,” said Gronholm. Battle resumes in New Zealand on 17 November.
