Our snappers captured a pair of undisguised cars being put through final testing, revealing exactly how the new model will look. The Merc gets a neat rear end inspired by the larger S-Class and CL. The curvy new styling incorporates a shorter boot, with wraparound tail-lamps and chrome trim.

Designers are keen for the C-Class to have its own appearance and take inspiration from, rather than copy, the firm's larger models. As a result, distincĀtive S-Class-style wheelarches appear beside a fresh crease on the sides.

The heavily sculpted bonnet also features a stepped design to highlight the traditional Mercedes grille at the front. Customers will be given the option of a panoramic glass roof, while interior quality will be improved.

The new model should debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March, before arriving on forecourts later next year. Buyers in need of extra space will be able to opt for an estate, but this gets a sporty tapering roofline, rather than a more roomy upright tailgate.

Entry-level power comes from the company's 1.8-litre petrol engine, while 2.5 and 3.5-litre six-cylinder units will also be available. Oil-burning models - including the C220 and C320 CDIs - will be joined in the line-up by high-performance AMG variants.
