Vectra hybrid lead way in LA

Vauxhall makes a shock entrance at LA show

Is it Vauxhall's turn to share a shocking secret? The unveiling of a new electric hybrid version of an American General Motors model suggests it could well be!

This is the new Saturn Aura Greenline, one of five hybrid and fuel cell vehicles launched by GM at the LA Motor Show this week. Powered by a 2.4-litre petrol engine combined with a large, battery-powered electric motor, the Greenline produces 164bhp and 40mpg. Sharing its bodyshell and much of its engineering with the forthcoming new Vectra, the appearance of this special Aura suggests that Vauxhall will soon follow suit and launch its own hybrid version of the family favourite.

The Aura Greenline uses General Motors' new 'two mode' hybrid system, which it claims can be engineered to fit nearly all of its latest vehicles. To prove it, the arrangement will also be added to the firm's big off-roaders, such as the GMC Yukon. All cars equipped with the system will have stop-start engine technology and regenerative braking to help recharge the batteries without straining the powerplant.

Although there are no firm plans for the UK, it's thought Vauxhall could launch its first hybrid car as early as next year.
