The white compact MPV is the first of a new line-up of sporty-looking cars for family buyers who want a dash of extra style.
Called the R Line, the range takes inspiration from the company's high-performance Golf R32 and Passat R36 (revealed in Issue 937). But instead of large engines, the R Line models get visual updates. First revealed on the Touran, styling tweaks include body-coloured bumpers, chrome air intakes, 18-inch alloys and special R logos. Inside, there's a badged leather steering wheel, aluminium pedals and unique door trims.
Other changes include sports suspension with a lowered ride height, and stiffer springs. The package is available with most engines in the range, although bosses have yet to confirm if the Touran R Line will go on sale in the UK. However, they have given the green light to Golf and Passat R Line models which hit showrooms early next year. In the meantime, VW has also revealed another special MPV, in the shape of the CrossTouran. With rugged side cladding, muscular bumpers and longer suspension travel than the standard car's to allow for more ground clearance, it mixes off-roader looks with MPV practicality. Roof rails add to its usability, as do hard-wearing seat fabrics.
Power is from a range of engines, including a super-charged and turbocharged 167bhp 1.4-litre unit as well as a 170bhp 2.0 turbodiesel. On sale in Europe next year, the CrossTouran won't be coming to the UK.
