Start haggling at the forecourts and you may be pleasantly surprised

02nd January 2007

Forget the New Year high street sales – get down to your local used forecourt for a bargain instead. After shutting up shop for a few days for Christmas, dealers will be keen to do some business – especially after a traditionally quiet December. Now’s the time to start haggling on that second-hand motor you’ve been wanting for the past few weeks.

LAND ROVER may have pitched its new Freelander 2 against upmarket 4x4s such as the BMW X3, but according to initial figures, it won’t be able to match its German rival’s residual values. After three years and 60,000 miles, the 2.2 Td4 SE Freelander will retain 41 per cent of its £28,252 new price. That works out at five per cent less than the X3.
