The solution say boffins is to put the head restraint 2.4 inches from the back of your head before you start your journey.
Neurosurgeons used virtual drivers to see what happens to neck muscles and ligaments when a car is hit from behind - and confirmed what safety chiefs had long suspected. "Restraints positioned less than 2.4 inches from the back of the head keep ligament stretch within the range so no injury would occur," said Dr Brian Stemper of the Medical College of Wisconsin, US. In total, more than a quarter of a million Britons currently suffer from whiplash injuries.
