This is the four-door Interceptor Concept, which is inspired by the legendary coupé. The chunky slab-sided saloon will be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show, and reveals how a family-friendly version of the Mustang would look.

Its high waistline and small windows ensure an aggressive stance, while the three-bar grille borrows from the 2006 F-250 Super Chief pick-up concept. Exterior touches include neat LED headÂlights, square vents in the front wings and chrome details. Design chief Peter Horbury said: "This concept celebrates the best of American muscle. And if it looks familiar, it should." That's because the squared-off lines were also a key feature of the Super Chief.
Ford's designers have taken a minimalist approach inside, with controls for the stereo and air-conditioning hidden behind slide-back covers. Other unusual features include low-backed seats with four-point seatbelts and head restraints that fold from the roof.
To go with its muscle car image, there's a 400bhp 5.0-litre V8 under the clamshell bonnet, and it's mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. The motor was developed from the 4.6-litre unit fitted to the Mustang by Ford Racing, and it runs on bioethanol. The show will also see the launch of the MKR from luxury arm Lincoln. The four-door study was designed by Gerry McGovern, who has now replaced Geoff Upex as chief stylist at Land Rover.
