News in brief

Team RAC has confirmed Tom Onslow-Cole as its second driver for this year’s BTCC campaign

04th February 2007

The 19-year-old marked himself out as a man to watch by winning last year’s Renault Clio Cup. Onslow-Cole will line up alongside Colin Turkington in the two-pronged BMW attack.

Flex appeals for Newey’s new car RED Bull is adopting a flexible approach with its new car as it targets podium places in 2007.

The RB3, penned by former Williams and McLaren tech chief Adrian Newey, will offer plenty of scope for development as the season progresses. “We’ve had to build a car to run on Bridgestone tyres that we’re not familiar with, so we’ve designed some versatility to deal with this,” he said.

FORMER F1 star Juan Pablo Montoya won his first race since the 2005 Brazilian GP when he triumphed in the Daytona 24-hour sportscar enduro in Florida.

The Colombian was partnered by American Scott Pruett and Mexico’s Salvador Duran in a Ganassi Racing Riley-Lexus. They beat Brits Darren Manning and Ryan Dalziel to record the victory.

BTCC race winner Gareth Howell will drive a SEAT Toledo Cupra for the Motorbase outfit in this year’s series. The 26-year-old supported Matt Neal’s title bid when required in recent seasons, but has now secured a full-time seat.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in,” said Howell. “My aim will be to go for race wins, as I’ve got a taste for victory after my time with Team Halfords. Being part of that team taught me a lot – I hope I can put what I’ve learned to good use.”
