These are the first official pictures of Volvo's new V70, which is set to go on sale in the UK in September.

Based on the same platform as the S80 executive saloon, the V70 benefits from an all-new platform and fresh styling. The front is barely distinguishable from the S80, but the rear is more distinctive, with an upright tailgate that splits the LED lights. What's more, if you have a large load which means you need to drive with the hatch open, the body-mounted lamps still display all the necessary signals.

Inside, the Volvo's boot is bigger than ever, with an extra 55 litres. Aluminium rails and hooks are also fitted, while even more space is available if you fold the three-part 40:20:40-split rear bench.

Buyers can also opt for a special sliding boot floor to make loading easier, as well as an electrically powered tailgate. There's more room for rear passengers than in its predecessor, and an integrated child booster seat is available, featuring two height settings.

The V70's engine range includes a 197bhp 2.5-litre turbo, 235bhp 3.2-litre straight-six and 281bhp 3.0-litre T6 turbo petrol, plus a choice of 161bhp and 182bhp 2.4-litre diesels. A bioethanol version will join the range by the end of the year. All variants come with a six-speed auto, and Volvo claims that handling will be improved thanks to a chassis which is 15 per cent stiffer than the outgoing V70's. Dynamic stability and traction control are fitted as standard, while the flagship T6 model gets four-wheel drive.

Safety has been a top priority during the estate's development, and all of Volvo's latest airbag and side impact systems are fitted.

Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Show next month, the V70 will also spawn the XC70 crossover. With chunky bodywork and an all-wheel-drive transmission, it will go head-to-head with the Audi Allroad in the battle for sales.
