Hair-brain plan

A hairdresser-turned-designer has invented a plastic made from human hair, which is said to be ideal for car panels

18th February 2007

"It's better at crumpling in an impact than conventional materials," said creator Ronald ThompĀson. "And it doesn't leave sharp edges when it cracks."

The hair is smothered in epoxy resin, like fibreglass. Called PiliusX, it is being tested at a London university. Thompson hopes car firms will like its eco-friendliness, as the hair rots down to nothing after use.
