Evoking memories of the legendary 205 GTi, the new model boasts a modern turbo powerplant, a sophisticated ESP system and great looks.

Under the bonnet is the same 1.6-litre engine as in the 207 GT. But Peu­geot has boosted power from 150bhp to 175bhp. Mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, it propels the car from 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds and on to a 137mph top speed. That makes the 207 GTi quicker than the Renaultsport Clio 197 and nearly as fast as Vaux­hall's forthcoming 189bhp Corsa VXR.

The engine should also be flexible, offering 244Nm of torque from only 1,600rpm. This temporarily peaks at 264Nm during full-throttle over­taking, thanks to an 'overboost' function.

To keep the performance in check, the suspension is reworked to include stiffer springs and dampers front and rear, a beefier rear torsion beam and strengthened front struts. The power-steering has been recalibrated, while the 17-inch alloys get 205/45-section Bridgestone tyres. Large front brakes with 305mm diameter discs are backed up by a new ESP stability set-up. This applies braking power to the wheels with the most grip, and shortens stop­ping distances on slippery surfaces. The safety systems have earned the GTi a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.

A full body­kit, roof spoiler and twin chrome exhausts set the 207 apart, as do Alcantara-clad bucket seats inside. Adaptive automatic lights, rear parking sensors and cruise control are all standard. On sale in the summer, the 207 GTi will cost around £15,500.

However, an even more powerful Peugeot baby is expected in 18 months' time. With a tweaked 1.6-litre turbo offering about 240bhp, plus a six-speed box and a wilder bodykit, it promises to draw on the firm's rally experience.

Meanwhile, Peugeot has lifted the lid on prices for its new 207 CC. The model will be available in two trim levels - Sport and GT - and with three engines

The base 120bhp 1.6-litre petrol Sport costs £14,795. A 150bhp GT version is also available, starting from £16,895. Topping the range is the 110bhp 1.6-litre HDi oil-burner, which is priced at £17,095.
