These official sketches give a sneak preview of Maserati's new sports coupé, which gets its first airing at next week's Geneva Motor Show

Maserati MC12
Pininfarina-styled coupé gets MC12’s nose and triangular tail-lights

The Italian firm's bosses will also reveal the car's name at the Swiss expo. The coupe is known internally as M145, but rumours that it could wear the firm's classic Mistral badge appear to be wide of the mark.

Penned by famous Italian styling house Pininfarina, it's clear where the designers have looked for inspiration. Swooping bodywork gives the new coupe a muscular stance, but its low grille is clearly inspired by Maserati's MC12 supercar. Slanted headlamps and triangular rear light clusters are also set to make an appearance.

Under the bonnet there's a powerful 4.2-litre V8, which is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. Keen drivers will have to wait for the arrival of a sportier variant, which comes with revised suspension and the firm's racy semi-automatic gearbox. A conventional manual is unlikely to be offered and the brand has yet to sign off a cabrio - although it's thought one is on the cards.

The Geneva star is expected to hit showrooms in September, with prices starting at around £70,000 - close to those of the outgoing GranSport.
