Sleek Toyota points to hybrid future

It's the Toyota with the X factor...

Toyota Hybrid X Concept
Smooth lines will boost Hybrid X's aerodynamics

16th March 2007

Meet the Hybrid X Concept - a car which the firm claims showcases the future of its petrol/electric models. And key to the evolution of its environmentally friendly cars are lower emissions and excellent aerodynamics. Penned by ED2, Toyota's European styling centre, the Hybrid X has smooth surfaces, a low nose and a high tail, all of which reduce drag. Energy-saving headlamps built into the base of the windscreen extend back into the dashboard, lighting up both the road ahead and the cabin.

And it's the inside that's especially interesting. Accessed through four electrically operated doors, it's claimed to provide occupants with an "interactive ambience". This means they're treated to different sounds, smells, textures and lighting, depending on their mood. Under the bonnet lies a tweaked version of the familiar Hybrid Synergy Drive, claimed to offer good economy and near-zero emissions. Executives were keen to stress this isn't the next Prius but, at 4,500mm, it's about the same size. Don't be surprised if something similar to the concept hits showrooms in 2009.
