1,001,508: record for a single car just beating the one million sales mark - Nissan's 1978-1982 Cherry N10. Renault's 14, available from 1976-1982, failed by a whisker at 999,093.

2.2: the profit, in billions of dollars, made by a resurgent General Motors in 2006. This figure compared with a .2billion loss the previous year.

0.007: length, in miles, of road space per car on the UK network. There are 245,068 miles of tarmac, but it has to cope with 30,651,700 vehicles.
