Audi continues its winning streak

The pioneering diesel-engined Audi R10 prototype remains unbeaten

Diesel R10 edged Acura in Sebring 12 Hours in Florida

23rd March 2007

The firm’s number two entry shared by reigning Le Mans champions Frank Biela, Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner won this year’s 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida.

After writing motorsport history by taking the first victory for a diesel sportscar at Sebring last year, this time the Audi had to fend off a race- long challenge from the new lighter, petrol-engined Honda-powered Acura driven by IndyCar stars Dario Fran-chitti, Tony Kanaan and Bryan Herta.
But it was the sister Audi of reign- ing American Le Mans Series champions Allan McNish and Dindo Cap-ello, plus Tom Kristensen, that led for much of the opening five hours until electrical trouble caused two pitstops costing them 30 minutes. “We had starter problems which was a shame, as we were in a very strong position,” said McNish.

The Scot was bidding to become the most successful British driver in the 55-year history of the American classic. He finished fourth overall and runner-up in the LMP1 class.

“We showed a lot of strength of character to keep fighting, and taking second place in our class is very important in terms of retaining the ALMS title,” concluded McNish.
