Wheldon loses his lead

Brit star Dan Wheldon has slipped to second place in the IndyCar series after only finishing ninth in St Petersburg

English ace now trails Scot Dixon

04th April 2007

The Englishman had been looking to build on his victory in the opening round of this year’s championship, but struggled to make an impression on the tight street circuit and slipped five points behind his Ganassi Racing team-mate Scott Dixon. The New Zealander moved to the top of the table after finishing runner-up to Helio Castroneves.

Wheldon wasn’t the only Brit to suffer. Both Dario Franchitti and Darren Manning qualified in the top six, but neither managed to build on their promising grid positions: Franchitti faded to finish fifth, while Manning ended up a lap down and out of the top 10.
