Unveiled at New York, it’s the result of customer demand for a more powerful engine than the current model’s 3.7-litre five-cylinder unit.
The 5.3-litre V8 in the new H3 Alpha delivers 295bhp and 430Nm of torque – up 53bhp and 102Nm respectively. As a result, it can cover 0-60mph in around eight seconds, and tow loads of up to 2.7 tonnes.
It’s the second Hummer to carry the Alpha tag – which denotes the military vehicle maker’s most powerful and visually enhanced models – and follows in the footsteps of the vast H1 variant. As well as the new V8, the H3 gets 16-inch chrome alloys, a large Alpha badge on the tailgate and embroidered headrests. Buyers can also specify chrome trim for the roof rails and fuel filler cap.
Completing the changes are a chrome-finished grille, plus a unique spare tyre cover and valve caps. At the same time, Hummer has introduced a raft of safety updates across the H3 line-up. As well as standard curtain airbags, all models are now equipped with electronic stability control, traction control and a tyre pressure monitoring system.
