Featuring a bold front end with a large grille inspired by the spectacular Sixteen concept, it was the star of the firm’s stand in New York.
As well as a refreshed exterior – complete with side air intakes influenced by the Sixteen, plus chrome door handles and aluminium exhaust pipes – the executive model gets an uprated interior, with changes to the dashboard and steering wheel, plus new Sapele wood trim. Under the bonnet, the STS benefits from a new 298bhp 3.6-litre direct-injection V6 petrol engine, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. This delivers lower emissions and better fuel economy than before.
The model is offered with a head-up display, which projects vital information – such as the car’s speed – into the driver’s eyeline.
There are also a number of new safety features, such as a lane departure warning system, which uses a camera mounted in the rear view mirror to read lines in the road.
Active steering is included – this counter-turns the front wheels automatically if the rears start to slide – while a blind spot warning system is available, too. Expect the new STS to go on sale in the UK in early 2008.
