It's the end of the road for Volvo's R performance badge...

The Swedish maker is phasing its performance badge out because of lukewarm demand for its hottest models. The 300bhp 2.5-litre S60 R arrived in 2003 and was expected to take the fight to established German rivals such as the Audi S4 and BMW M3.
The estate version - the V70 R, which can sprint from 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds - offered performance and practicality. But slow sales have forced company bosses to axe the sporting range. However, that doesn't mean Volvo will stop making quick cars altogether. A powerful variant of each model range, such as the new V8-engined S80 saloon, will still be offered.
