Inventors have come up with a new self-release clamp that drivers can remove themselves via the built-in combination lock.
"Clamping is intended to deter drivers parking on busy routes, but once their vehicle has been immobilised it slows the traffic," explained Chris Nicklin, director of creator Traffic Management Products, based in Smallfield, Surrey. "The self-release clamp alleviates this problem as the affected motorist is sent the release code by mobile phone as soon as they have paid the fine."
On top of the penalty, the driver has to put down a deposit on the clamp, which is refunded if the £200 device is returned within a week. The combination code is changed by the clamping company when it gets it back. Meanwhile, parking charges in the UK have soared over the past six years, experts claim.
The average rise for the country is 25 per cent, but some areas, including Hertfordshire and Kent, have seen hikes of up to 90 per cent in parking ticket prices. London is the most expensive - two hours in Westminster costs £7.99, compared with £3.68 in Manchester, £3.35 in Cardiff and £3 for Darlington, according to a report from Direct Line Insurance.
