The Seventies off-road favourite joins classics such as the Frog and Vanessa’s Lunchbox, which have been relaunched in recent years.
In terms of looks, the Brat remains largely unchanged from the original radio-controlled mud-plugger, but underneath, the rear-wheel-drive chassis has been updated and is now made from stronger stuff. Included in the self-assembly kit is independent suspension and full ball bearings to maximise acceleration and top speed. There are also two bodyshells: one is made of plastic similar to the original BRAT’s, for a nostalgic feel, while the other is in lightweight polycarbonate material. Meanwhile, power comes from a type 540 motor.
If you prefer motorsport thrills to rough terrain fun, Tamiya has also produced a radio-controlled WTCC BMW 320si. Similar to the machine that took Brit Andy Priaulx to World Touring Car Championship glory last season, it comes ready to assemble.
The model has four-wheel drive, plus all-round independent double wishbone suspension to give spot-on handling. Neat features are the LED head and tail-lamps, which automatically light when you switch the car on.
