Nissan Skyline GT-R 34
Winged wonder: GT-R offers stunning performance

Not only is Nissan’s Skyline GT-R one of the best-recognised performance cars in the UK, it carries a name that’s become as evocative as any rival.

What makes this more remarkable is that less than 50 models were officially sold in the UK. Yet that hasn’t stopped enthusiasts getting their hands on them – the number imported unofficially is said to run into the thousands.

So what is the key buying advice? According to our experts, the golden rule is only to choose vehicles that are already here. While Skylines brought in from Japan seem good value, import procedures are complex, and the only way to be sure of what you’re buying is to examine the model in the metal. Avoid fancy bodykits – crash damage can be hard to fix – and ensure the engine has a long UK service history.

Look out for cars promising massive power, too; many can’t match their performance claims, and are difficult to keep running smoothly. However, strong engines and capable gearboxes mean the Nissan is very reliable, and can take more than its share of abuse.

A quick search of any classified site reveals you get what you pay for with a Skyline. If you want the best, there aren’t many bargains to be had.
