While Lewis Hamilton has scored three seconds and a third in the four races so far this year, Spyker’s German driver Sutil (image) has 17th, 15th and 13th-place finishes, plus one retirement, to his name. Yet when the pair were team-mates in Formula Three only two years ago, Sutil was far from outclassed.

He was certainly impressive enough to catch the attention of Spyker chiefs. Tech boss Mike Gascoyne, who’s worked with the likes of Fernando Alonso and Damon Hill, rates him and believes he can succeed at Monaco.

Gascoyne explained: “Lewis is doing an unbelievable job, while Adrian is struggling at the back. Still, Adrian outqualified Lewis at Monaco in F3.

“He’ll really be able to show what a talent he is there this year. He’s doing a superb job, and I think his pace is pretty strong. Once he stops making rookie errors, which everyone does, he’ll be very good.
