Keep a cap on safety

Too new to be included in our test in issue 946, these new Tyre Alerts from distributor Brandnetics show promise

At-a-glance tyre pressure monitor fixes to valve

27th May 2007

And that’s not surprising, because they are dead ringers for our winning valve-cap monitors, Auto Unique’s Pressure Guard.

Both products work in the same way, covering pressures from 20-42psi and fitting on the valve once the tyres have been correctly inflated. As with the Pressure Guard, a red tab appears above the green marker inside the clear tip when tyre pressure is lost, as indicated on the packaging.

The Tyre Alert gave similar results, too, with the red section becoming visible after 4psi had been lost, and then being clearly on display following a 6psi drop. As with all systems of this type, it’s only really for alerting drivers to major pressure losses. To keep your car handling, braking and using fuel properly, you will have to invest in a decent gauge.

Nevertheless, the Tyre Alert is one of the best products in this class of the market. In fact, the only downside is the price. Our winner from Auto Unique (test here) came in at £12.50 for a set of four at the time of our test, and is £12 now including postage and packing – these newcomers cost £15.99.

Tyre Alert valve caps, price: £15.99, rating: 4/5, buy from: 0161 482 4000, www.brandnetics.co.uk
