Research by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) found that, despite a three per cent rise in sales of eco-friendly superminis and diesels, running costs remained the most important aspect of any motoring purchase.
Nearly a third of respondents claimed they topped their list of priorities. Only 13 per cent said that they regarded CO2 emissions as the main consideration when buying a new car.
