The hi-tech kit - which is already on trial - can be used to trap motorists breaking the speed limit or going through a red light. It's equipped with a digital camera, so it never runs out of film - meaning every law-breaker will be caught. The hard drive stores up to 100,000 images, which can be downloaded by police via the built-in modem.

To add versatility, the unit can also be turned through 180 degrees to take either front or rear facing pictures, thanks to an anti-dazzle colour filter flash. Using electrical sensors in the road, it does away with the need for bulky radar equipment, making it smaller and harder for motorists to spot. The camera is on initial trials with Transport for London in Isleworth, Middlesex.

Truvelo spokesman Peter Hill is confident it will soon be catching motorists. "After these tests, the camera will begin Home Office trials," he said. "We expect it to be in operation by the end of the year."
