The all-new Mazda 2 supermini will be available with a super-green petrol engine that's capable of returning 65mpg

Based on the firm's 1.3-litre aluminium MZR four-cylinder, the unit has special valve timing, which keeps the intakes open slightly longer than the standard unit does during the compression stroke.
The timing system is called the Miller cycle, and it helps boost efficiency by reducing pumping losses. Together with Mazda's first-ever CVT auto gearbox, it improves economy by 20 per cent.
That means the 1.3 can deliver a claimed 65mpg - similar to many diesel superminis. The engine has lower CO2 emissions as well. When it goes on sale in the autumn, the 2 will also be available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. Prices start from £9,000.
